Introduction:

Vascular Cell Adhesion Molecule 1 (VCAM1, also known as CD106) is a protein expressed by vascular endothelial cells to aid the adhesion of various leukocytes. Its expression is induced as a response to some inflammatory mediators, such as TNFα and IL-1β, or by oxidised lipids and cholesterols; these induce signalling of NFκB via the production of reactive oxygen species. VCAM1 is expressed in some cancer cells in metastasis.
