CHES | C-2431
CHES is a zwitterionic N-substituted amino sulfonic acid, Good's buffer. CHES displays high affinity for the iodoacetate binding site of liver alcohol dehydrogenase, protecting the enzyme from inactivation by iodoacetic acid. Its useful pH range is 8.6-10.0. It has a pKa of 9.49 at 25°C. A buffering agent is a weak acid or base used to maintain the acidity (pH) of a solution near a chosen value after the addition of another acid or base. That is, the function of a buffering agent is to prevent a rapid change in pH when acids or bases are added to the solution.
